Double Drop
Double Drop Trailer
A double drop trailer, also knows as a lowboy trailer, is a specialized type of flatbed trailer designed to transport oversized or tall cargo. It is called a “double drop” because it features a lower deck in the centre, creating a two-level or double-deck design. This lower deck allows for greater clearance and flexibility when transporting tall or large items that would not fit on a standard flatbed trailer.

Key Features
- Lower Deck: The central section of the trailer features a lower deck, often referred to as the “well”. This well is significantly closer to the ground than the main deck of a standard flatbed trailer
- Tall Cargo Capacity: Double drop trailers are ideal for transporting tall or oversized cargo, such as heavy machinery, construction equipment, large industrial components, and other items that exceed standard height limits.
- Versatility: The double drop design provides flexibility for loading and unloading freight. It can also be driven onto the well section, and it may also be loaded using cranes, forklifts, or other equipment from the sides.
- Ramps: Some double drop trailers have built-in ramps that allow for easier loading and unloading of heavy equipment
- Size and Weight: The size and weight of a step deck can vastly depend on the trailers design and specifications and number of axels. Step decks are generally capable of handing substantial weight.
- Detachable Gooseneck: Many double drop trailers have a detachable gooseneck (the front part of the trailer that connects to the truck). This feature allows for easy loading and unloading by lowering the front of the trailer to create a ramp
